CS 473: Understanding Colorism Beyond Common Discourse pt 1

Today we have Robert Reece on the show to talk about colorism. Robert received his PhD in sociology from Duke University and is currently an assistant professor of sociology at UTAustin. His research explores the question “what is race,”, particularly through the exploration of themes related to the origins of racialization and racialized social outcomes, the slipperiness of racial categories, and how physical appearance maps on to and intersects with race. Roberts’ work has been published in various peer-reviewed journals and in public outlets such as the Southern Poverty Law Center’s magazine Teaching Tolerance and the National Housing Institute’s blog Shelterforce.

CS 469: RIP The Great Awakening, 2014-2020 pt 1

On today’s episode, Teen (Escape From Plan A, @mont_jiang on Twitter) and Chris (Escape from Plan A, @JesuInToast) join Trevor to discuss the life and death of “The Great Awokeness”. The basic idea of this episode is that the economy was good for a while, so people had money to waste and also wanted to talk about a lot of hot-button issues involving marginalized groups thanks to events in the news that were kept in the forefront via social media and protests. Now money is tight and people are out of patience for a lot of these social issues, but many in academia, politics, and media didn’t get the memo and are in for a rude awakening.
